The elaborate wing markings of the Royal Assyrian (Terinos terpander robertsia)
remind me of the fine patterns on the kain songket, a hand-woven fabric that is the
product of a Malaysian cottage industry. This butterfly was photo- graphed hanging upside-down
from the underside of a leaf. I have seen a few other species with this tendency to
take refuge under a leaf, especially when they have been disturbed or frightened.
