This isn’t what it appears to be...
Looking like bird dropping splattered onto a leaf, this crab spider
is the bait. By mimicking bird excrement, bird-dung crab spiders (Phrynarachne
species) lure insects, including butterflies, that feed on bird faeces
for the salts they contain. Among spiders, the bird-dung crab spiders are almost certainly the
masters of disguise.
