The stalk-eyed fly is so called because its eyes are borne at the end
of slender projections, or stalks. The length of the stalks varies with species. In the species pictured
here, possibly Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, the length from one eyeball (compound eye, in fact) to the other
is nearly the length of the body.
